This Web site is a prototype concept in progress.
West Trails.net connects volunteers to trail projects throughout the Western U.S.
- 1) Trail crew leaders post projects for all volunteers to discover. Currently it is difficult for volunteers to be notified of projects outside their "home" area.
- 2) Bringing together all trail groups in one place makes it easier and cheaper to recruit volunteers and encourage a culture of trail work.
- 2) The project repository will be used for advocacy with funding sources and political initiatives.
- 3) Trail crew leader and trail worker recruiting and skills development.
We are currently experimenting with a trail project on the Little Sur River in the Ventana Wilderness, Los Padres National Forest.
This concept was instigated by Jim Preston in November 2006 for discussion purposes with a small group of trail work leaders in the West. It is a work in progress. It will soon be using Google Maps and Google Earth for display and planning purposes. The only section operational at this time is for the Little Sur River Trail in the Ventana Wilderness, Los Padres National Forest, California.
Possible other sections that could be included:
- 1) Forums for detailed discussions on trail topics.
- 2) A social network application to bring volunteers together in a collaborative work environment.
- 3) A wiki for developing an encyclopedia of trail work knowledge.
- 4) Blogging.
